Colts Sign Tight End Sean McGrath, Waive Jean Sifrin

The Indianapolis Colts today announced a minor roster move, as they signed tight end Sean McGrath to their active roster and waived tight end Jean Sifrin.

McGrath (6-5, 247 pounds) originally signed with the Seattle Seahawks as an undrafted free agent out of Henderson State in 2012 and played in two games for Seattle in his rookie year.  He signed with the Kansas City Chiefs for the 2013 season and played in all 16 games (starting nine) and caught 26 passes for 302 yards and two touchdowns, averaging 11.6 yards per reception.  After failing to report to training camp with the Chiefs in 2014, it was revealed that he was retiring due to personal reasons, and he spent the entire 2014 season out of football.  He was reinstated and then released earlier this offseason, and the Colts signed him today.

Sifrin signed with the Colts as an undrafted free agent out of Massachusetts earlier this offseason and has worked with the Colts in rookie mini-camp and offseason workouts.  In his senior season at UMass, he caught 42 passes for 642 yards and six scores.  He was initially discovered playing flag football years ago and was a 27-year old undrafted rookie, but he was cut by the Colts today.

The top two on the tight end depth chart for the Colts are firmly established in Dwayne Allen and Coby Fleener, but after that there are spots to be won.  Jack Doyle seems like the favorite to win the third tight end spot, but others like Erik Swoope could look to make a push as well.  For McGrath, it is hard to tell how he will play after a year away from the game and therefore it's hard to judge his chances at making the roster, but he'll need a very impressive training camp and preseason to beat out guys like Doyle and Swoope for a spot on the 53-man roster.
