The best games on PlayStation Plus, Extra, and Premium

Best Product Robocop getting out of a car.
Nacon

PlayStation Plus has undergone several iterations and changes since its introduction. Originally, the service wasn’t required for online play at all and rewarded subscribers with extra discounts and free monthly games. Once the PlayStation 4 generation began, it was required for online play, but still offered those same benefits.

Now, PS Plus is divided into three different tiers of subscriptions. The basic tier, PS Plus Essential, still gets three games per month added, while the Extra and Premium tiers will have a varying number of games added to their catalogs monthly. With hundreds of games in the catalog already and more coming and going all the time, even the most dedicated gamer won’t be able to play everything on offer. To help you get the most bang for your buck and so that no hidden gems fly under your radar, here are all the best games to play on PS Plus Essential, Extra, and Premium right now.

Headlining your April games lineup is no joke. RoboCop: Rogue City is a game crafted with the love and care for the source material that only the most passionate fans could have. You are let loose in Old Detroit as the legendary Robocop himself to enforce justice in large open hubs. Besides giant gunfights and raids, you will also be doing some detective work to solve crimes and do your duty as a cop. Set between the second and third films, with Peter Weller repraising his role as Robocop, this is a smaller-budget game that punches way above its weight.

The trend of horror games going the asymmetrical multiplayer route feels fresh again with The Texas Chain Saw Massacre. This time, it isn’t just one killer against all the survivors, but three who each have their own abilities. The goal is for the survivors to solve puzzles, sneak around, and find one of multiple escape routes from each map while the Family team tries to stop them. If you love Dead by Daylight but want something a little fresh, this is a great way to spend a few hours with friends.

Last up is the sequel to one of the best Digimon games, Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth – Hacker’s Memory. Playing the first helps understand the world and systems of this entry, but isn’t necessary for the plot. You play as Keisuke Amasawa, a Digimon trainer who has been accused of a crime he didn’t commit. He needs to go into the digital world to investigate the crime and prove his own innocence. This leads him to cross paths with a group of hackers attempting to stop a larger plot. Combat is done in a turn-based fashion that feels like a mix of a Pokemon and Persona game.

Souls games have never been more popular, and this is a remake of the game that started it all. Not only is this remake just astoundingly beautiful to look at, but is as mechanically faithful to the original as possible. The only changes are to quality-of-life features, leaving the challenge of besting the levels, and bosses, all on your shoulders. It’s a little clunky in some ways but holds up remarkably well for a game over a decade old thanks to the new coat of paint.

Hopefully you played or added Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order to your library when it was offered on Essential because now the sequel has come to Extra. Survivor continues the story of Cal Kestis in the events between the prequel and original trilogy, only now he has access to far more tools. Aside from more force powers, you can swap between various fighting styles to spice up the lightsaber action. The story and Metroidvania structure to the various hub planets are still the main draw here and are just as fun to navigate. The story here might surprise you with how emotional it gets. Even if you have Star Wars fatigue, this is a game that feels like a breath of fresh air.

Lost Records is a story split between the mid-’90s and the modern day after a group of friends had a falling out and are brought back together under mysterious circumstances. It is full of nostalgic vibes and strong character moments, as well as a mystery that will pull you through all the way to the end. Your choices can completely change what that ending is, so it is worth a second playthrough to see what other possibilities could have occurred.

Hideo Kojima’s first game after breaking up with Konami was about as off the wall as everyone expected it to be. While some dismiss it as a walking simulator, the act of walking, climbing, scrambling, and tumbling across treacherous but stunning landscapes is far more engaging than it may look. In many ways, it is quite a therapeutic experience, so don’t come expecting a high-action thriller (though there are moments of it here and there). The story is uneven, but the highs are very high, making it a journey worth taking.

The classic PS2 franchise made a huge first impression on the PS5 with Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart. This game really shows what the new hardware can do in all aspects. The graphics are on the level of an animated feature comet to life, the frame rate is rock solid, and the resolution is beautiful and even offers ray tracing, but the real showpieces are the rifts. The whole concept of this title is that the dimensions are falling apart, allowing Ratchet, and new protagonist Rivet, to seamlessly move from one dimension to the next. It is a trick so amazing that you may not believe it’s real. Oh, and it also helps that the game is a fantastically fun shooter with tons of personality and creative weapons and enemies.

The PS2 entry, Twilight of the Spirits, is a great game with an amazing concept: You play as two brothers who are each human-deimos hybrids raised in different parts of the world. Deimos are the monster society of the world that uses magic, while humans use technology, but both racially judge the other. The journey swaps back and forth between these two perspectives, each overcoming their own plots until they finally intersect and have to put their biases aside to face a true evil. It’s great JRPG storytelling with a fantastic battle system.

JRPGs with an Old West setting are basically nonexistent, but Wild Arms paved the way for this odd mishmash of cultures in a fantastic JRPG that old-school fans will absolutely love. You play as a trio of characters, letting you get to know each of them intimately. Each one has its own ability to use outside of battle for traversal and puzzle-solving. It features a classic turn-based battle system, but with a dynamic camera thanks to being in 3D, and plenty of strategy and depth. It isn’t the longest game, either, making it an easy entry point to JRPGs as a whole. If that unique blend of West and East worked for you, then the only real way to scratch that itch is with the sequel. Wild Arms 2 features a brand new cast but is set in the same world. You can now rent a PlayStation 5 from PlayStation Direct for the price of a sandwich
A PS5 Pro sits on a table with a DualSense.

The PlayStation 5 is a hefty investment, but you can now get your hands on one without the high upfront cost. PlayStation Direct has started a rental program (only in the United Kingdom for now), offering participants a rental PlayStation 5 for as low as 10.99 GBP — roughly $15.

The price goes up as the lease term goes down, and there's a lease-free option that's 21.95 GBP each month but can be cancelled anytime.
