to the historical membership list of the Theosophical Society, founded in New York in 1875.

Between 1985 and 1942  the headquarters of the Society in Adyar (now Chennai) registered close to 300.000 new members worldwide. However, this amount does not represent the real impact the Society had on culture, society and science. Theosophists were very active in expanding their networks and in promoting their ideas. Thus Theosophy was incorporated into mainstream culture and thought, even more than today is recognized. Researching the people involved in the dissemination of thought helps to understand the scope of influence the Society had on modernism.
