  • Steyr AUG A3 M1

The iconic bullpup-style Steyr AUG has been one of the most recognizable rifles in the world since its adoption by the Austrian army in 1977 and is now available for civilian use as the Steyr AUG A3 M1, a semi-convertible ambidextrous rifle platform with an adjustable short-stroke, gas-piston operation chambered for 5.56x45mm (.223 Remington) ammunition in stock 10-, 30- or 42-round magazines.

The multi-configurable M1 variant of the AUG A3 platform is the latest generation of the venerated bullpup platform. Utilizing an optics attachment platform similar to the rare and much-sought-after AUG A2, the AUG A3 M1 is available in a Short-Rail version, a High-Rail version as well as an Integrated-Optic version with either a 1.5X or 3X scope. The AUG A3 M1 Optics version has a more traditional AUG scope tube with exceptionally bright and clear optical elements, modernized with the addition of three Picatinny rail sections to accommodate accessories like a close-quarters holographic sight. With 16 numbered slots, the High-Rail version was designed to accommodate the widest range of optic choices, and the 11-slot Short-Rail version was designed for use with a reflex sight or a longer-eye relief optic. The rail and optics platforms on all three AUG A3 M1 versions are interchangeable via the three base screws that thread from the underside of the top of the receiver.

The AUG A3 M1 boasts am overall length of just 28.15 inches, including its 16-inch heavy barrel, making it at least 8 inches shorter than an M4 carbine with a comparable-length barrel. The short-stroke gas-piston operation of the AUG runs exceptionally cleaner by nature because all of the operational exhaust gas vents out of the front of the rifle. The AUG’s matching, yet opposed, stainless steel operation and guide rods affixed to the bolt carrier glide effortlessly inside the receiver for unparalleled smoothness in operation as well as exceptional reliability. Dual gas-adjustment settings ensure its operation, even with the dirtiest ammunition and in adverse conditions.

The AUG A3 M1 has all the classic features and benefits that established it as the pinnacle of modern rifle design, including expedited disassembly as well as simple conversion to left-hand operation, which requires replacement of the standard bolt with the optional left-eject bolt and swapping the ejection-port cover. It also features a quick-change barrel with a collapsible forward grip as well as a two-position cross-bolt safety that locks the trigger.

The receiver was also updated to replace the permanently affixed front sling swivel with a VLTOR Quick-Disconnect Sling Swivel, which makes two-point sling attachment or removal extremely fast and easy, and users of single-point slings can remove the front sling swivel entirely, if they so desire.

The AUG A3 M1 stock, cocking piece and forward grip are made of highly durable synthetic and are available in Black, Green, Mud and White colors. The rifle is available in either the standard version that accepts genuine Steyr AUG magazines or as a NATO version that accepts standard STANAG (AR) magazines.

Outstanding! Review by john_b

The AUG is well balanced and easy to handle. Recoil is minimal. This thing is more accurate than I am. Trigger is a bit stiff, but not overly so. I've read several complaints about skinned knuckles while racking the slide, and that can happen if you grab the handle from the top (palm down). However, the manual that comes with the AUG CLEARLY shows the cocking lever is designed to be racked palm UP from underneath. Doing it this way is actually easier and quicker. The only reason I gave 4 stars instead of 5 is that the polymer stock around the mag release button, and the safety button had some sharp burrs that needed filing off. (Posted on 1/30/2017)
Awesome Review by Tim

I have had this rifle for about 2 years now and love it, I can't believe how accurate it is, especially with it's trigger which is not that great at all, but overall it is still awesome. My main complaint is it has no shell deflector and also Steyr doesn't offer a 300 Blackout barrel for it. I called Steyr last year and ask if they would start making a 300 Blackout barrel for it and was told "NO". IAs I stated to the rep Tavor and others offer theirs in 300 but he still said no. I would buy another one if they offered it in 300 or a least a barrel but as it stands I will buy a Tavor or a Lithgow Atrax when it becomes available. It looks like Steyr would jump on the 300 as popular as it is becoming and I have several friends that also want the 300 in the AUG and have seen several post on line of Steyr owners wanting a 300 in it, I guess Steyr doesn't care what their customers want. My Favorite 5.56 Rifle Review by SamM
Quality
Over the years, I have owned or shot just about every 5.56 rifle on the market. The Steyr AUG is my favorite! All my other 5.56 rifles have been sold. They were just collecting dust. The AUG has the best ergonomics of all the bullpup series carbines. The futuristic design is timeless. It is a proven system, highly accurate and has the best taken procedure available. Field stripping and cleaning this rifle is a joy. Take out the barrel, S trip it, wipe it down, run a bore snake, lube and go!

I also have the NATO stock for my AUG. This gives me more options and is a great feature to have. Shooting suppressed is nice with the adjustable gas system. I highly recommend this rifle!

One of my best "impulse buys" EVER Review by Tony

Recently ended up testing an AUG for a friend who was laid up very ill and just wanted to know how his AUG handled and shot.

I was so impressed with it that I went out and bought one the very next morning.

The quality of workmanship, the out of the box performance and the sheer ease of use and maintenance are incredible. It literally takes MINUTES to get used to an AUG. I loved the 16 inch variant so much....but being a rifleman....I just had to have the 20 inch. Sooooo, the morning after I bought my AUG, I ordered a 20 inch barrel. Once that arrived, right onto the gun it went and off to the range I went. Yet again nothing but stellar, confidence inspiring performance.

Option for option, pound for pound....if you need a bullpup, buy the AUG. (Posted on 1/3/2017)
Amazing rifle Review by taurinmosby

I hate being late to the party!!! I have wanted one of these since I first saw the rifle training the Australian Army back in 1995 in Darwin Australia. Well, I finally got one today!!!! I went directly to the range, after having to go register it (I live in Hawaii now) and I must say this rifle is nothing short of amazing!!! I only was able to put 100 rounds thru it today but ZERO malfunctions!!! The recoil is softer than any rife I own!!!! Pictures dont do it justice, this is a compact gun!!! Dont waste your money or time going the SBR route, just get this. The rifle is DEAD ON ACCURATE!!!!! I slapped an ACOG (TA31FRMR) on it and it was good to go.

I just have one gripe,

To Steyr Arms,

I hope you read this, you need to offer this in Left Hand out of the box!!!! There is no way you should make customers pay 250 to get a left hand bolt. Please, fix that. At least make it an option if you order the rifle on the website.

Other than that, the rifle is the best one I have owned this far and a pleasure to shoot. (Posted on 12/30/2016)
The AUG is a great rifle. Review by Mark S.

I own four of these rifles and honestly have been kicking back and forth the past couple years just going to all AUG's for my carbines instead of using AR's. I gave the rifle four stars because it needs a forward case deflector. Also would like to see more top rail choices for the M1 instead of just the short and long- neither of which is really long enough. (Posted on 8/14/2016)
If there could be only one.... Review by Jeff

Since purchasing an AUG A3M1 with the factory 3x scope, I have found myself more often than not leaving my other rifles at home when going to the range. There is absolutely nothing I do not like about this rifle and it has given me zero issues.

After sighting the rifle in, I took the AUG to the Civilian Marksmanship Program Range and managed to get an entire magazine within the black at 100 yards. For a shaky handed, near-sighted fellow like myself I was greatly impressed with the accuracy. Triggers on bullpups have a bad rep but I had no issues with the AUG trigger. (Posted on 7/13/2016)

Shooting the Steyr Aug I compare to driving a Cadillac- very smooth and almost no kick. I also have an original AR-15 and an M4, and both of them kick. If I had known that the A3 was this smooth, I may own three of them by now:).
Signed- very satisfied... (Posted on 3/22/2016)
Fantastic Rifle Review by STG1 Beauregard
Quality
I owned a STEYR USR (AUG with a thin strip of plastic from the bottom of the rear grip up to the stock to make it a "thumb-hole stock" to defeat current assault weapon rules.) back around 2002. The design of these rifles is second to none, you can switch from left handed to right handed in about 60 seconds with no tools. You can swap from a short barrel to a heavy barrel with the push of a button. Adjustable Gas block, the bull-pup design gives it fantastic balance. I can not say enough how great these rifles are. Favorite gun I have owned Review by Chris
Quality
This gun is nothing short of phenomenal.

I got mine with the 3x Swarovski scope and couldn't have asked for a better gun. It shoots tight groupings and is very easy to stay on target. The design allows it to be one of the shortest rifles available and puts all the weight in your shoulder so it is comfortable to hold for a lot longer time than an AR or AK.

It's amazingly easy to strip down, clean and reassemble. It is a very well thought out gun, and can completely disassembled and reassembled in under a minute without tools.

Built like a brick outhouse, accurate hits at +300 yards Review by Boar Slayer
Quality
If this was a U.S. made weapon we would be supplied these as our main battle rifle in the military. The accuracy is absolutely mind blowing considered how physically compact this rifle is. It still houses a full length barrel in the bullpup design, but the barrel axis is low and gives you that real steadiness the AR types lack. I have hunted and bagged MANY wild boars with this bad boy using only the built in scope for my optics. It comes apart in seconds and cleans in minutes after a full day shooting over 200 rounds. My M16 in the Army was a filthy mess after 20 rounds, and took hours to clean. The AR15 now can be bought with a gas piston system that is suppose to help alleviate this headache, but guess what! the Aug has had one from the starting gate and is way stronger and better in every conceivable way. Did I mention it comes apart in three pieces? Buy one! It is everything you need and nothing you don't. Also it is not covered with cheese grater rails, plus if you ever managed to burn out the drop forged barrel, you can replace it in seconds with a new one. with no tools. Don't believe me look it up on you-tube. (Posted on 2/3/2016)

My Favorite Rifle Review by Hendro
Quality
The Steyr AUG is an accurate, reliable rifle, that is well balanced and easy to use on the move. It is hands down my favorite rifle. I have owned one for about 15 years now, and have yet to have a malfunction or problem of any kind. (Posted on 11/19/2015)
Often imitated never duplicated perfection Review by Dcharlestonian
Quality
Sets the standard and over 30 year battle proven! First bulpup auto to really "work". Sure there are other bullpups out there but none can be stripped down to the barrel in record time like this rifle. Cleaning and serviceability are beyond compare with the quick change barrel and gas piston all in one. Adjustable gas system fires great even suppressed. I own 4 and have tried other bullpup rifles and find nothing yet to rival the precision and engineering feat of the AUG. Get the NATO version and use STANAG magazines(USGI). (Posted on 11/18/2015)
