What We Do BookOps acquires, describes, prepares, and delivers new items for the circulating collections of Brooklyn Public Library (BPL) and New York Public Library (NYPL), and for the general collections of NYPLâs research libraries.Â
Selection Team - Selects and orders more than 1 million items annually for the circulating collections of Brooklyn Public Library and New York Public LibraryÂ
Acquisitions Department - Orders, pays for, and receives new materials, including firm orders and approval plansÂ
- Orders and pays for shelf-ready materials drop-shipped to branchesÂ
- Orders and posts payments for serials subscriptions and standing ordersÂ
- Receives all irregularly issued serials (invoiced individually)Â
- Licenses and establishes access to e-resourcesÂ
- Monitors general and special book fund expendituresÂ
Cataloging Department - Catalogs general collection materials in all formats including books, periodicals, audiovisual media, and electronic resourcesÂ
- Updates the catalogs for BPL and NYPL and maintains the quality of catalog recordsÂ
- Participates in national cooperative cataloging programsÂ
Collections Processing Unit - Labels newly cataloged materials in all formatsÂ
- Links item barcodes to catalog records for circulating collectionsÂ
- Sends soft cover books to commercial library binders; sends damaged hardcover items for rebindingÂ
Logistics Department- Sorts and distributes newly processed collections among 150 library buildings covering 4 boroughs: Manhattan, Brooklyn, The Bronx, and Staten IslandÂ
- Distributes First Class and inter-office mail and book returns for BPL and NYPLÂ
- Operates a fleet of 10 delivery vehicles including one climate-controlled van dedicated to transport of special collectionsÂ
- Staffs mailrooms in NYPLâs Mid-Manhattan Library, Stephen A. Schwarzman Building, and the Science, Industry and Business Library
