Legendary actor William Marshall, who won fame for his work as Blacula, Frederick Douglass and Othello, recently died in a rest home in Los Angeles. The 78-year-old performer suffered from Alzheimer's disease within the last several years.
Born in Gary, IN, the acclaimed actor had a stellar career that was marked by his work of stage, screen and television.
He was well received for his role in the horror movie Blacula in 1972; it was the first horror film to star a Black lead. As the Black Dracula, Marshall found it important to bring dignity to Blacula, a character originally to be depicted as bumbling and dimwitted. Producers reshaped the role and allowed Marshall to portray an articulate African prince, Mamuwalde, who is bitten by Count Dracula. …
