Housing Options

The Housing and Dining Services offers traditional single-gender residence halls, coeducational residence halls, suites, apartments, houses, fraternity and sorority houses and special interest housing. Please note that room rates differ for each of these categories.

University housing is available both on and off campus to all first-year students 17 years of age or older. First-year students under the age of 17 are asked to contact the Office of Housing Services. Transfer student housing is subject to availability and transfer students should contact the Office of Housing Services for more information. Housing facilities, located on the campus proper, are conveniently close to the academic buildings. The Oakland Community Apartments are located within a 5-10 minute walking distance to campus. The Oakland Community Apartments are serviced by the University's shuttle service on a regular basis.

Beginning in Fall 2004, University housing will be smoke-free, except for Webster Hall and Fairfax Apartments. Currently there are designated resident hall floors that offer smoke-free living; a particularly desirable alternative for living options in the university housing system.

Furnishings

Housing Services provides each resident with a bed, desk, chair, bookshelf, dresser and closet or wardrobe. Each room has window coverings; some living areas also have floor coverings. Residents supply such items as pillows, bed linens, bedspreads, curtains, area rugs, etc.

Rates

Residential room rates include utilities, maintenance, basic cable service, ethernet or broadband Internet and a telephone connection in each accommodation. Residents pay separately for room and public area damages, premium cable channel service, and telephone usage. (Campus and local calling is free. Residents pay for all other calls by using their personal authorization code provided by the MobileSphere program.) Residents are required to supply their own phone.

Residence Types

University residences are divided into three categories at Carnegie Mellon: rooms, apartments and houses.

Rooms are grouped and priced by occupancy (the number of residents in each room by design) and room type classifications (standard or prime). Although single, double, triple and quad occupancy rooms are available, first-year students are rarely assigned to singles or quads. Room type classification is primarily based on the level of bathroom privacy, although other criteria may also be involved. Thesehave no in-room cooking facilities.

Apartments are grouped and priced by occupancy, location and the number of bedrooms. There are in-room cooking facilities in all apartments. Housing Services provides the following apartment types:

Houses are grouped and priced by occupancy, location and the number of bedrooms. Again, few first-year students are assigned to this type of accommodation because of high demand by upperclass students. Houses have the following facilities:

Note: We strive to fulfill each student’s individual housing preferences, but it is often difficult to accommodate everyone’s top choice due to the high demand for housing at Carnegie Mellon. The cost of attendance, used in the calculation of a student’s eligibility for financial aid, includes a housing allowance that is based on a standard double room rate.
