Modern Logistics Base

Nanshan boasts special advantage in terms of port facilities. The four major ports in the district, namely, Shekou, Dong Jiaotou, Chiwan and Mawan, are all natural deep-water ports, which are located in the estuary of the Pearl River water system. The west port area has become the container terminal port and one of the major bases for bulk cargo transfer in the south of China. At present, the throughput of containers in Shenzhen ranks the fourth in the world, while the Nanshan port area accounts for more than half of that of Shenzhen. In addition, Dachan Island Port in the western port area has been under construction. Upon completion, its output will amount to 10 million TEUs. Qian Haiwan Logistics Zone is one of the six largest logistics zones in Shenzhen. Tourism & Culture Base

Nanshan is abundant in tourism resources and welcomes more than 11 million visitors every year. Education & Science Research Base

Of 11 full-time colleges in Shenzhen, 8 are located in Nanshan. Shenzhen University City, Shenzhen University, Tsinghua University, Peking University, Harbin Institute of Technology, Financial College of Nankai University, Virtual University Campus, Shenzhen Higher Vocational Technical College, Shenzhen Hong Kong and Macau Industrial Research Base and so on are all here.

Nanshan is based on its functional orientation termed as “four bases” to further strengthen its four major industries, among which, the hi-tech and modern logistics are the two basic industries in the region, just like the two wheels of a cart, while the industry of trading and tourism and the cultural industry are two leading industries in the economic development of the region, just like two wings of a bird. The strategy of “Three-points, one-line and one-center” gives an outline of the future development of business, trade and tourism industries of Nanshan District. “Three points” indicate the three regional CBDs―Front Sea specializing in logistics and commerce, Back Sea - the cultural, commercial and financial center of west Shenzhen, and On Sea World - specialising in tourism and recreation. “One line” indicates the golden line integrating finance, commerce and head offices along Binhai Avenue. “One center” indicates the transformation of Nanyou business center from the Nanyou Industrial Zone. Shenzhen Bay Coastal Recreational Belt, at 15km long, stretches from west to east and crosses Nanshan.

At present, Nanshan District has not only 90% of key laboratories in Shenzhen, but also over 70% of municipal, provincial and national enterprising engineering centers in the city. The traffic links in the district are so convenient marked with well established road network in both directions. In the east-west direction, Binhai Avenue, Shennan Avenue and Beihuan Road link Nantou Peninsular to the districts of Luohu, Futian and Bao’an; Guangzhou-Shenzhen Expressway, as well as Gangwan Avenue, Nanhai Avenue and Shahe West Road in the north-south direction connect the district with all other places. The Line 1 of the metro system of Shenzhen has opened to the public by the end of 2004. The Guangzhou-Shenzhen Expressway and State Highway 107 enter the west port area through the expressways in the city. The Pinghu-Nantou Railway integrates the west port area with the national railway network and plays an important role in the railway cargo distribution transport in the west port area. SZ-HK Western Link, which connects Nanshan to Hong Kong, will be opened by the end of 2006. The construction of Nanguang and Nanping Expressways have commenced and the construction of Guangzhou-Shenzhen Expressway, which is connected to the SZ-HK Western Link, will commence soon. In order to improve port traffic, the government of Nanshan District plans to invest more than RMB 1 billion within several years to remold and newly build three roads for the ports to provide traffic support for the west port area.
