Historical Annual Visitation Statistics

The number of visitors during the period from the establishment of the park in 1872 to the beginning of this compilation in 1895 was estimated to be not less than 1,000 nor more than 5,000 each year. The number of visitors from 1895 to 1951 represents travel during the period from October 01 to September 30. Starting 1952, the figures represent travel during the calendar year.

Did You Know?
The 1988 fires affected 793,880 acres or 36 percent of the park. Five fires burned into the park that year from adjacent public lands. The largest, the North Fork Fire, started from a discarded cigarette. It burned more than 410,000 acres.
