Welcome to the Northern Mariana Islands Online Encyclopedia. This is
a demonstration website, to describe the encyclopedia project and to
display sample contents of the encyclopedia. The actual development of
the online encylopedia is underway. A usable system is expected to be
online some time in 2004. We welcome your comments and suggestions.
About The Online Encyclopedia
The N.M.I. Online Encyclopedia project is funded by the N.M.I. Humanities
Council with a planning grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities.
The online format is particularly suited to the Northern Mariana Islands
as an isolated geographical region, and will allow better understanding of our
environment, culture and history by people living in all areas of the world.
The N.M.I. Humanities Council plans to collaborate with Northern Marianas
College and the local public school system to provide an up-to-date educational
resource for students and scholars of the Mariana Islands.
Proposed Encyclopedia Topics
The Encyclopedia Planning Committee’s subcommittee on Content &
Editorial Policy has approved nine major subject headings for the N.M.I.
Online Encyclopedia.

Project Timetable and Events
The encyclopedia project began in January 2002 and is being supported
in part by a planning grant awarded to the Council by the U.S. National
Endowment for the Humanities (NEH). The project is directed by a
six-member Encyclopedia Planning Committee (EPC) that includes Elizabeth
D. Rechebei, Felicidad Ogumoro, P. Vincent Riley, Herman T. Guerrero Jr.,
Samuel McPhetres, and William Bezzant. The EPC is responsible for
developing an implementation grant proposal that will be submitted to
NEH for funding consideration in July 2003.
Ms. Rechebei said that her committee have drafted editorial and
intellectual property policies, established and outlined major content
areas, and identified a growing list of potential contributors. The EPC,
with the assistance of a cadre of community and off-island volunteers,
is now focusing on establishing partnerships with public and private
sector organizations, raising needed funds, and securing other necessary
materials and assistance.
The project will culminate in an encyclopedia planning conference
scheduled to be held on Saipan in March 24 - 28, 2003, during which
humanities scholars and local experts will review policies and finalize
encyclopedia content. Individuals wishing to assist or learn more about
this project are invited to contact Humanities Council staff Scott
Russell at ph. +1(670)235-4785.
