The Mad Capsule Markets
Osc-Dis
Manga/Palm
Japanese punk rockers would probably rather be robots
Release date: September 18, 2001

Nothing makes angry music seem edgier than a thick coating of electronic noise. And judging from this Japanese trio’s fondness for dressing like anime space pilots, the Mad Capsule Markets are deeply into the “tech” end of techno-metal. But where Ministry or Static X go for an ice pick to the eardrum, MCM’s American debut — which draws broadly from the band’s Japanese back catalog — mitigates its speaker-punishing noise with a conventional sense of melody. Although Osc-Dis (short for “Oscillator in Distortion”) fairly accurately describes the synth-glazed surfaces of “Tribe” and “Restart!”, there are enough hooks lurking below the surface to encourage singing along — at least on the English bits.
