215x compression of Our World in Data
[edit]Hi, this is a follow-up to the WP:VPT. As I predicted was possible, I compressed the 33 MB down to only 157 KB. My sandbox is here. The loading time is instant.
However, you were right that we should have some kind of MediaWiki gadget. The scroll detection I had is very slow, and MediaWiki straight up breaks it by blocking all HTML inside the SVG. All your 5 points work except for the "if you click on a country it should pull up a graph of how data has changed in that country over time" part that I still need to add. The silver lining in this CSS solution is that it stores the data compactly and the animations are smooth.
Could you give me your feedback on this please? Also, I'm new to gadget and user scripts. VectorWorld (talk) 20:22, 31 March 2025 (UTC)
- @VectorWorld we have already decreased the size about 10 fold by only loading the region of the world the person has open rather than all regions.
- Yes not duplicating the underlying map is a good idea, will see if we can add this to our gadget. Security issues as mentioned by RobLa are often a roadblock it is impossible to get around. Doc James (talk · contribs · email) 21:29, 31 March 2025 (UTC)
Request to Unprotect Asthma Page
[edit]Hi! I am a student taking a social computing class at a university and one of our assignments is focused on editing a Wikipedia page. My group has chosen the Asthma page, and we've planned out edits we are hoping to respectfully suggest on the talk page and responsibly implement. Unfortunately, the page is semi-protected. Our assignment is due soon and we would like to be able to begin suggesting edits. Would it be possible to unprotect the page? It has been protected since 2013 and we do not see any signs of vandalism. GildedFirefly (talk) 03:44, 1 April 2025 (UTC)
- I may look into this. However, note that you can begin suggesting edits even when a page is semiprotected. Feel free to @1101 in order to reach me or other users who you want to make edits for you or approve your edits. It looks like if you either wait just four days or make just ten edits, you will be able to edit a semiprotected article. Otherwise, simply use a template to make an edit request on the talk page. 1101 (talk) 06:07, 1 April 2025 (UTC)
- Thank you for your reply! Is there any way you may consider unprotecting the page soon? We are required to make edits ourselves for our class assignment, so simply suggesting them and having others make them for us does not meet the requirements. Four days is also too long for us to wait to start this assignment. Have you encountered a lot of vandalism on the page or could you explain what your hesitancy is in unprotecting the page? Thank you for helping us understand and being open to talking with us about this. We really appreciate it. GildedFirefly (talk) 20:04, 1 April 2025 (UTC)
- You should contact your professor. By the way, requesting an edit is an edit, even if indirectly. I haven't unprotected any pages before. I am not an administrator. I can't unprotect the page, but I just asked the administrators to temporarily downgrade the protection status of the page. However, I think that, if your assignment is due soon, you should make those requests now. There's no reason for your professor to not accept them. 1101 (talk) 08:11, 2 April 2025 (UTC)
- I have unprotected the page and will be watching it. Any edits that are not supported by compliant citations will most likely be deleted. Graham Beards (talk) 20:14, 2 April 2025 (UTC)
- Thanks, just catching up on things. Doc James (talk · contribs · email) 21:26, 3 April 2025 (UTC)

[edit]It's been a long time. I hope you are doing well. I just created B52 (medical treatment) and it cites some EM literature, so I thought you'd be happy to read this short article. Best. Biosthmors (talk) 16:35, 18 April 2025 (UTC)
