Bishnupur district is a proposed district to be created in the Indian state of West Bengal. The district would be carved out from the existing Bankura district. The district headquarters would be Bishnupur.[3][4][5]
History
[edit]In May 2019, the Government of West Bengal announced its intention to create the district in the near future. Under this proposal, Bishnupur district will be created from six community development blocks namely Sonamukhi, Bishnupur, Patrasayer, Joypur, Indas and Kotulpur in Bankura district. In August 2022, the cabinet of West Bengal gave "in-principle approval" to the district's formation.[6][7][8][9][10][11][12][13]
Geography and Demographics
[edit]The proposed district would cover an area of approximately 1,870.75 square kilometers. Based on the 2011 Census of India, the total population of this area is 1,111,935, with an urban population of 105,351. The literacy rate stands at around 70.28%, and the sex ratio is 914 females per 1,000 males.
Culture and Heritage
[edit]Bishnupur is famous for its terracotta temples, built during the 17th and 18th centuries under the rule of the Malla dynasty. It is also the birthplace of the Bishnupur Gharana—a classical music tradition of eastern India.
In 2015, the Government of West Bengal announced that Bishnupur would be developed as the state's first official "heritage city".[14]
Economy
[edit]Bishnupur is well known for its traditional crafts, including terracotta pottery and Baluchari sarees. In April 2025, the Bishnupur Motichoor Laddu, a traditional sweet made using Piyal seed flour, received a Geographical Indication (GI) tag.[15][16]
Transport
[edit]The proposed district is connected via State Highway 2 (West Bengal), which links Bishnupur to key towns and cities in the region. The area also has rail connectivity to Kolkata and Asansol.
