The Furious 50's and the Screaming 60's


These latitudes are renowned among sailors for the prevailing westerly winds that circle the globe. The sea conditions and the weather are as bad as any place on the planet.
This is where some of the consistently highest waves (over 50 feet) in the world come from and winds in the area peak at more than 93 miles per hour and exceed 23 mph 40% of the time.
In New Zealand which is in this area.... drilling was considered for the deep water reserves but found too costly in the 1970's. New Zealand has begun now to offer leases for new exploration with better technology and market prices.
The easy natural gas has been found....these are the new locations being explored.
Barkly seen here on the north shore of Lake Superior is also know for its dramatic and unpredictable weather for shipping....its only open half the year..its frozen the other half.
