This page hosts requests to stewards and global renamers for a username change across the entire Wikimedia network. Please read the instructions before posting a request.

This is also the page where the usurpation of inactive accounts can be requested.

SUL finalization

If you are requesting a merge of a global account with one or more unconnected local accounts as part of finalizing your single unified login (SUL) username, please specify which wikis and accounts you want to merge into your global account. These accounts were typically named "account name~wikiname". Please note that we can only merge a local account into a global account when the global account has no edits on the same wiki as the local account.

Making a request for your own account

For changing your username on one wiki:

Please include the following information in your request:

  • the old username,
  • the new username,
  • please sign ~~~~ request with your account for a simple move (first section), or sign this request with both the originating and the target accounts if you are requesting a merge (second section).

If anything is missing from your request, a steward will request more information. This helps ensure that you are requesting a rename for your own account. Please check before posting your request that the username you want is available.

You can test that by going to the (new) user page and looking into the sidebar. If there is a link to user contributions, the account already exists, or check via Special:CentralAuth.

Private requests

Account renames are not private, once renamed many links from the old username to the new username will be permanently made. The reason submitted on the rename form (Special:GlobalRenameRequest) is private, and only visible by the renamers. Additional information that needs to be made in private may be sent using this direct wiki-email interface while logged-in.


Simple rename requests

If your rename request is simple and does not involve usurpation of an existing account or other SUL issues, you have two options:

  1. Use the request form at Special:GlobalRenameRequest; or
  2. Submit the request below in this section.

Please use this tool to check if the username is taken before filing a request.

Requests involving merges, usurps or other complications

Please add new requests at the end of the section. Sections should be titled your username and requests should be signed by the requesting user.
Please note: Per standard procedure and consensus, accounts with valid edits are not usurped, and the target account must be notified by renamer at least two weeks before usurpation.

  • Reason: I would like to change my current Hindi username "मुज़म्मिल अंसारी" to "Muzammil Ansari" in English. I have been using the Hindi username to write articles on Wikipedia, and I have many contributions under this account.Delete Inactive English Account: There is already an account with the username "Muzammil Ansari" that I created earlier, but I forgot its password and cannot log in. This account is inactive and has more than one contribution (I am not sure of the exact number, maybe 2 or 3 articles). I kindly request you to delete this inactive account so that I can use the username "Muzammil Ansari" for my main account (मुज़म्मिल अंसारी).Merge Contributions: Before deleting the inactive "Muzammil Ansari" account, I request you to merge all its contributions (articles, more than one, possibly 2 or 3) into my current account (मुज़म्मिल अंसारी). As per the instructions at the top of this section, global user account merges are not possible because the UserMerge extension is incompatible with CentralAuth; however, the username Muzammil Ansari is eligible for usurpation, so we can proceed with that for you. Since you have mentioned that this was your account, could you please provide proof to support your claim? This account has an email address associated with it, and if you have access to that email, you can recover the account directly and then add a comment to this request confirming ownership. This will allow us to instantly rename your account to Muzammil Ansari. If you do not have access to the associated email address and are unable to provide proof of the connection, we will follow the standard procedure, meaning that the request will be placed on hold for 14 days, during which a notification will be sent to the Muzammil Ansari account; if there is no opposition to the usurpation within this period, we will proceed with the usurpation of the account for you. – DreamRimmer (talk) 13:34, 19 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for your responses and for explaining the process clearly.
1. **Password Reset for Inactive Account**: I tried to reset the password for the "Muzammil Ansari" account using [en:Special:PasswordReset](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:PasswordReset). However, I am unable to recover the account because I do not wish to proceed with the password reset, even though I have access to the registered email. I would prefer to move forward with the usurpation process instead.
2. **Usurpation Process**: Since I am not proceeding with the password reset, I am ready to follow the standard usurpation procedure. I understand that this involves a 14-day hold period, during which a notification will be sent to the "Muzammil Ansari" account. If there is no opposition within this period, the username can be usurped for my active account ("मुज़म्मिल अंसारी"). I am okay with this process and would like to proceed with it.
3. **Account Merge Not Possible**: I understand that merging the contributions (1-2 articles) from the inactive "Muzammil Ansari" account into my active account ("मुज़म्मिल अंसारी") is not possible due to the incompatibility of the UserMerge extension with CentralAuth. I accept this limitation.
4. **Account Deletion Not Possible**: I also understand that account deletion is not possible due to software limitations. I am fine with the inactive "Muzammil Ansari" account remaining as is, as long as the username can be usurped for my active account.
    • Additional Information**:
- The inactive "Muzammil Ansari" account was created by me, but I cannot provide further proof of ownership since I am not proceeding with the password reset. I believe the account has 1-2 articles, though I am unsure of the exact titles. [If you recall the article names, add: I believe the articles created by the "Muzammil Ansari" account are titled "[Article 1]" and "[Article 2]".]
- My active account ("मुज़म्मिल अंसारी") is on Hindi Wikipedia (hi.wikipedia.org), and I can verify ownership via my registered email if needed for this account.
