Message from the CEO

“This report invites you to see the many ways your support has made a difference for the billions of people who rely on Wikipedia.”

Maryana Iskander
CEO of the Wikimedia Foundation

As the CEO of the Wikimedia Foundation, I regularly reflect on what Wikipedia has accomplished, and I imagine new ways that Wikipedia can achieve even more now and in the future. It’s a deeply collaborative role, and every day, I have the privilege of working alongside the talented staff at the Foundation and the committed volunteers around the world who enrich Wikipedia and its sister projects with knowledge. Their dedication, combined with the generosity of our donors, makes Wikipedia’s success possible. This Annual Report covers another remarkable year for Wikipedia, a testament to the millions of people like you who came together to make a meaningful impact.

The stories in this year’s report highlight diverse aspects of our collective work. Whether it was a new data center that gave millions of users faster access, or innovative tools that gave Wikipedia’s editors crucial new ways to expand and enrich its knowledge base, our report details the many ways that Wikipedia and its sister projects embody the highest ideals of the internet — or as we like to think of it, “The Internet We Were Promised.”

“The Internet We Were Promised” is this year’s theme, and reflects the vision that we’re realizing with your generosity. Throughout each year, I provide key progress updates, and the Wikimedia Foundation’s staff regularly reports on progress aligned to our Annual Plan. Each Annual Report brings these accomplishments together, allowing you to seamlessly explore one story after another. Much like the links between Wikipedia articles that lead to deeper discovery, this report invites you to see the many ways your support has made a difference for the billions of people who rely on Wikipedia.

With more than 60 million articles on every conceivable topic, Wikipedia’s human-led knowledge — rigorously sourced and written from a neutral point of view — is more important than ever. By being an active supporter of the Wikimedia projects, you ensured that the year we document here was as effective and impactful as it could be. I know you’ll see a lot to be thrilled by and proud.

So, thank you so much for your support. A single year in the life of Wikipedia sets up the momentum for every year that follows. It’s a powerful process that’s always collaborative — just like Wikipedia itself.

With gratitude,
Maryana

How Wikipedia got better than ever in 2023-2024

The Wikipedia that you read today is different from the Wikipedia that you’ve read in previous years. It has more knowledge than ever. It has more languages than ever. And it has something else that continues to make Wikipedia unique in the world: It’s the largest shared knowledge source in human history — a compendium of more than 60 million articles that more people rely on than ever. The more the world changes, the more the world turns to Wikipedia.

That’s why the 2023-2024 fiscal year was such a milestone year for the Wikimedia projects: As the world’s technologies advanced, along with the way people sought knowledge on the internet — including through “smarter” smart phones and AI-generated platforms like ChatGPT — Wikipedia advanced, too. During the year, the Wikimedia Foundation brought more technical innovation to Wikipedia, including a new data center that ensured millions of people could more quickly access Wikipedia’s knowledge from their phones and computers, and new editor tools that gave Wikipedia’s contributors crucial ways to add knowledge across Wikipedia.

You’ll read about these innovations in this Annual Report, which also details how Wikipedia continues to be an important bulwark against misinformation on the internet, and continues to produce neutral, verifiable knowledge that adheres to the highest ideals of the internet — or as we like to think of it, “The Internet We Were Promised.”

All the work we did helped lead to an important recognition after the year was over: Wikipedia was named a “digital public good” by an important United Nations-endorsed alliance. The recognition highlights Wikipedia’s unique role in advancing global access to a free and open source of trusted knowledge in the public interest.

As a nonprofit committed to Wikipedia’s operations and its future, the Wikimedia Foundation collaborates with contributors and donors around the world to ensure that the knowledge on Wikipedia and its sister projects is a trusted source in over 300 languages — not just English. In the 2023-2024 fiscal year, Wikipedia became more representative of the world, with contributors who hailed from virtually every country on Earth. Wikipedia is always adding new articles and reaching new people who realize just how important Wikipedia is to the modern internet. Everyone who engaged with Wikipedia in the 2023-2024 fiscal year had an impact on Wikipedia — whether you were an editor, a donor, or a reader.

Thank you. Year after year, donors and other contributors are what make Wikipedia so vital to the world. You gave Wikipedia what it needed the most this past year: The gift of your time. Taking a minute to donate — just like taking a minute to add knowledge — helped Wikipedia continue to grow and reach more people. Thanks again for what you did to make Wikipedia even better for everyone.

Conclusion

Wikipedia’s story is your story, too

Every year in the life of Wikipedia and its sister projects is a year of close collaboration across continents. By working with volunteers who number in the hundreds of thousands, and by using funding that comes from millions of generous donors, the Wikimedia Foundation aims to shepherd those projects toward new achievements that can make everyone proud.

This year’s stories reflect the many dimensions of our shared work, all contributing to a common goal: advancing knowledge equity across the Wikimedia projects. Knowledge equity refers to making it possible for more people to share reliable knowledge on Wikipedia and other Wikimedia projects. Wikipedia is built on the premise that it becomes better when more people of different backgrounds—including political persuasions—source, edit, curate, and research content.

We delivered on key commitments — from supporting editors with the tools they need, to expanding access to trusted, high-quality knowledge. The Annual Report is both a reflection of that progress and a recognition of the people who made it possible. From all of us at the Wikimedia Foundation: thank you.

The 2023-2024 Annual Report is both a look back and an invitation to continue looking ahead to the work that we can achieve with your support. Each year is a chapter in the greater story of Wikipedia and its sister projects. Year by year, the story adds new chapters and new highlights that reconfirm how important Wikipedia is. The knowledge we all count on is needed more than ever. Everything about Wikipedia is a collaborative effort, which makes the year’s successes that much more special to share with you and the world at large.

Navigating the numbers: An overview of the Wikimedia Foundation’s financial position

Accountability and transparency are foundational to the Wikimedia Foundation’s core values. We are dedicated to managing funds and resources in a way that ensures every contribution supports our mission of advancing knowledge for all.

In recognition of our commitment to these principles, we have earned the Platinum Seal of Transparency from Candid (formerly GuideStar), and Charity Navigator has awarded us its highest rating of four stars.

99/100

Nearly half of our budget goes toward supporting the technology that powers Wikipedia and other Wikimedia projects. We are constantly working to enhance the user experience for both contributors and readers, improve site security, and ensure reliable access to our websites globally. This infrastructure and product support sustain one of the top ten most visited websites in the world, all at a fraction of the cost of popular for-profit websites.

The global reach of Wikimedia projects is made possible by the hard work of volunteers from across the globe. We provide grants, legal support, and other resources to help build vibrant volunteer communities. Additionally, we promote community engagement through outreach initiatives and advocate for the growth and protection of free knowledge.

Operational costs are essential for the smooth management and governance of the Wikimedia Foundation. These expenses help us recruit top talent and support staff around the world, empowering them to carry out the mission of the Wikimedia Foundation.

Donor support is crucial to sustaining Wikipedia and our other free knowledge endeavors. Our team is committed to efficient and effective fundraising throughout the year, ensuring that every contribution helps advance our mission.

Wikimedia Endowment

Sustaining impact: Ensuring knowledge for future generations

The Wikimedia Endowment is a long-term financial fund established to ensure the sustainability of Wikipedia and other Wikimedia projects. As an independent entity, the Endowment plays a critical role in supporting the Wikimedia movement by securing funding for both immediate needs and long-term goals. This ensures the ongoing vitality of Wikimedia’s global community of users, contributors, and volunteers, empowering them to continue advancing the mission of freely sharing knowledge with people around the world.

Founded with the vision of preserving the open, neutral, and accessible nature of knowledge, the Endowment acts as a financial anchor for Wikipedia, funding innovations that help it adapt to new technologies and meet the growing demands of a global audience. Through its investments in projects like Kiwix, Abstract Wikipedia, Machine Learning, and Wikidata, the Endowment strengthens Wikipedia’s technical infrastructure and extends its reach to millions, ensuring that knowledge remains free and accessible for future generations.

This year’s Endowment Annual Report highlights the substantial impact of the Endowment’s funding, particularly in improving Wikipedia’s offline accessibility and advancing its machine learning capabilities. Kiwix, an offline reader for Wikipedia, has become indispensable in regions with limited internet access, benefiting millions of users who otherwise would not be able to access vital knowledge. Additionally, the Abstract Wikipedia project, which strives to create a language-independent version of Wikipedia, has made remarkable progress, enhancing Wikipedia’s global reach. The Endowment’s support for these and other initiatives underscores its commitment to maintaining Wikipedia’s relevance and ensuring it remains the world’s most trusted resource for information.

In the 2023-2024 fiscal year, the Endowment’s funding not only sustained existing projects but also fueled new innovations that will shape Wikipedia’s future. By supporting these advancements, the Endowment continues to fulfill its mission to protect human knowledge. The impact of these efforts is far-reaching, with billions of people relying on Wikipedia for reliable, verifiable, and freely available information. As we look ahead to 2024-2025, the Wikimedia Endowment remains essential in preserving Wikipedia’s legacy, ensuring it will be a vital resource for generations to come.

To read more about the ongoing impact of the Wikimedia Endowment and its funded projects, we invite you to explore the full 2023-2024 Annual Report.

Help ensure Wikipedia’s future

Giving for today
Making a gift today is the simplest way to ensure that Wikipedia remains strong, stable, and always there when you need it.

Giving for tomorrow
The Wikimedia Endowment is a safety net that helps protect Wikipedia now and into the future. Legacy gifts to the Wikimedia Endowment make an impact for years and years. By including Wikipedia in your will, estate planning, retirement plan, or insurance policy, you can leave a beautiful legacy for the next generation of Wikipedia users. To learn more email legacy@wikimedia.org or click the link below to explore other ways to give to the Endowment.

And that’s 2024 wrapped.

Feel free to download this report as a PDF booklet, and to share it with your friends online.
